    Overview

The Tile Calculator is a practical tool designed for homeowners, DIY enthusiasts, and contractors to estimate the number of tiles needed for any tiling project. Simply input your room dimensions, tile size, grout spacing, and desired waste allowance to get an accurate count of tiles required — with optional cost estimation.

Whether you're renovating a bathroom, tiling a kitchen backsplash, or laying flooring throughout an entire house, this calculator simplifies planning and reduces material waste. It supports both imperial and metric measurements and includes a currency selector for international users.

    Formula & Methodology

The tool calculates the required tile count using the following formula:

    Tiles Needed = (Area / Tile Area) × (1 + Waste%)
    • Area: Length × Width of the floor or wall
    • Tile Area: (Tile Length + Grout Width) × (Tile Width + Grout Width)
    • Waste%: Extra percentage added to account for cutting errors, tile breakage, and pattern layout

The result is rounded up to the nearest whole number to ensure sufficient coverage. If a tile cost is entered, the total material cost is also estimated.

    Example Calculation

Imagine you want to tile a 10 ft × 12 ft floor using 12 in × 12 in tiles, with 0.25 in grout spacing and a 10% waste allowance. Here's how it works:

    • Total Area: 120 ft²
    • Tile Area (incl. grout): 12.25 in × 12.25 in = 0.104 ft²
    • Tiles Needed: 120 / 0.104 = 115.4 → Rounded to 116
    • With 10% Waste: 116 × 1.10 = 128 tiles
    • Total Cost: 128 × $1.20 = $153.60 (if price per tile is entered)

This ensures that you buy the right number of tiles — no over-ordering, no costly underestimation.

    FAQ

Can I use metric and imperial units?

Yes. Choose between Metric (meters, centimeters) or Imperial (feet, inches) from the dropdown at the top of the form.

How is grout width factored in?

The grout width is added to both the tile's length and width to ensure a proper fit when tiles are spaced out during installation.

What is the waste percentage for?

It's a safety margin to account for damaged tiles, layout patterns, and cutting loss. We recommend 5–15% depending on complexity.

    What currency can I use?

The tool supports USD ($), EUR (€), GBP (£), INR (₹), and JPY (¥). All currency values update automatically when selected.

Does the calculator handle wall and floor tiles?

Yes. It works for any rectangular tiling project — walls, floors, backsplashes, patios, or ceilings.
