Age Curve
Overview
The Pet Age Calculator maps your pet’s chronological age into a human‐equivalent age using species‐ and size‐specific conversion curves. Rather than a flat “7×” rule, it accounts for rapid early development and varying aging rates later in life.
Formula and Methodology
We use piecewise formulas:
- Dogs: \( A_h = \begin{cases} 15\,A_p, & A_p<1 \\ 15 + 9\,(A_p-1), & 1 \le A_p < 2 \\ 24 + M_{\rm size}\,(A_p-2), & A_p \ge 2 \end{cases} \)
- Cats: \( A_h = \begin{cases} 15\,A_p, & A_p<1 \\ 15 + 9\,(A_p-1), & 1 \le A_p < 2 \\ 24 + 4\,(A_p-2), & A_p \ge 2 \end{cases} \)
- Rabbits: \( A_h = \begin{cases} 12\,A_p, & A_p<1 \\ 12 + 5.5\,(A_p-1), & A_p \ge 1 \end{cases} \)
Here, \(A_p\) is pet age in years, and \(M_{\rm size}\) is the dog‐size multiplier (4.5–7).
Example
A 3-year, 4-month old medium dog (Labrador): \(A_p = 3 + \tfrac{4}{12} = 3.33\). First two years → 24 human years, Additional 1.33 years × 5 → 6.67, Total ≈ 30.7 ≈ 31 human years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why not use ×7 for dog years?
Early years develop much faster; a one‐size‐fits‐all factor is inaccurate.
How do I pick the right size category?
Choose based on adult weight; if unknown, “Medium” is a good default.
What if my pet is mixed or “Other”?
For “Rabbit” use the small‐mammal formula. Other species will be approximate.
