Overview

The Fuel Cost Calculator estimates the total cost of fuel for a journey. Simply input your trip distance, your vehicle’s fuel efficiency, and the current fuel price. Choose between metric units (kilometers and L/100km) or imperial units (miles and MPG), and select your preferred currency.

Explanation & Methodology

The calculation is based on the formula:

Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Fuel Efficiency) × Fuel Price

For metric units, fuel used (in liters) = (Distance (km) × Fuel Efficiency (L/100km)) ÷ 100.

For imperial units, fuel used (in gallons) = Distance (miles) ÷ MPG.

Example Calculation

Metric Example: For a 300 km journey with a vehicle efficiency of 15 L/100km and a fuel price of €1.50 per liter, the fuel used = (300 × 15) / 100 = 45 L, and the cost = 45 × 1.50 = €67.50.

Imperial Example: For a 300-mile journey with a vehicle efficiency of 25 MPG and a fuel price of $3.50 per gallon, fuel used = 300 ÷ 25 = 12 gallons, and the cost = 12 × 3.50 = $42.00.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is fuel efficiency?

Fuel efficiency indicates how far your vehicle can travel per unit of fuel. In metric, it is expressed in L/100km; in imperial, in MPG.

How is the fuel cost calculated?

The tool calculates the fuel required for the journey by dividing the distance by fuel efficiency (with appropriate adjustments for the chosen units) and then multiplies by the fuel price.

Can I compare different scenarios?

Yes, simply adjust the inputs (distance, efficiency, or fuel price) and re-calculate to see how the estimated cost changes.
