Overview
Speed (or velocity) measures how fast something moves per unit time. Common units include meters per second (m/s), kilometers per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph), and feet per second (ft/s). In Advanced Mode, additional units appear such as knots (nautical miles per hour), Mach (speed of sound), feet per minute (ft/min), centimeters per second (cm/s), millimeters per second (mm/s), and kilometers per minute (km/min).
Formula & Methodology
Internally, all conversions use meters per second (m/s) as the base.
- Convert the input speed to m/s using the “unit → m/s” factor.
- Convert from m/s to the target unit using the reciprocal “m/s → unit” factor.
Below is the table of “unit → m/s” factors used.
Unit | Equivalent in m/s | Notes / Definition |
---|---|---|
Meters per second (m/s) | 1 | 1 m/s |
Kilometers per hour (km/h) | 0.2777777778 | 1 km/h = 1000 m / 3600 s |
Miles per hour (mph) | 0.44704 | 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s |
Feet per second (ft/s) | 0.3048 | 1 ft/s = 0.3048 m/s |
Knots | 0.5144444444 | 1 knot = 1 nautical mile/3600 s = 0.514444 m/s |
Mach | 343 | 1 Mach ≈ 343 m/s (speed of sound at sea level) |
Feet per minute (ft/min) | 0.00508 | 1 ft/min = 0.3048 / 60 m/s |
Centimeters per second (cm/s) | 0.01 | 1 cm/s = 0.01 m/s |
Millimeters per second (mm/s) | 0.001 | 1 mm/s = 0.001 m/s |
Kilometers per minute (km/min) | 16.6666666667 | 1 km/min = 1000/60 m/s |
Examples
-
Convert 10 m/s to km/h:
10 × (1 / 0.2777777778) = 36 km/h -
Convert 60 mph to m/s:
60 × 0.44704 = 26.8224 m/s -
Convert 100 knots to m/s:
100 × 0.5144444444 = 51.4444 m/s -
Convert 5 Mach to km/h:
5 × 343 m/s = 1715 m/s → ×3.6 = 6174 km/h -
Convert 1000 ft/min to mph:
1000 × 0.00508 = 5.08 m/s → ÷0.44704 = 11.37 mph
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest unit here?
“Mach” (speed of sound) is the highest common unit—Mach 1 ≈ 343 m/s (≈ 1235 km/h).
How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply mph by 1.60934 to get km/h (or use this converter: 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s → ×3.6).
Why are knots used?
Knots measure nautical miles per hour and are used in aviation and shipping. 1 knot = 0.514444 m/s.
Is this converter valid offline?
Yes. Once loaded, all calculations happen in your browser—no further internet access required.
Is this tool mobile-friendly?
Yes. On narrow screens, the two columns collapse into one for easy use on phones and tablets.
